Department of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease
All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rajkot
Advancing Microbial Science. Elevating Infectious Disease Care.
Established in 2021, the Department of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease at AIIMS Rajkot is a rapidly growing academic and clinical center committed to excellence in diagnostics, patient care, medical education, and translational research. Built on the foundation of precision science and compassionate care, our department bridges the gap between bench and bedside in the field of infectious diseases.
Vision
To be a national and global leader in microbiological diagnostics, education, and infectious disease research—driving scientific progress and improving public health outcomes through innovation, collaboration, and clinical excellence.
Mission
- To advance scientific understanding of infectious diseases through high-impact research in microbiology, virology, parasitology, and antimicrobial resistance.
- To educate and inspire future clinicians, microbiologists, and physician-scientists through robust undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty training.
- To deliver state-of-the-art diagnostics and clinical services, providing timely, accurate, and evidence-based infectious disease management.
- To serve as a hub for surveillance and outbreak response, particularly for Western India and the unique epidemiological landscape of the Saurashtra-Kachchh region.
Academic Excellence
Our department offers a strong academic platform supported by expert faculty and cutting-edge infrastructure:
- MD in Microbiology – A competency-based postgraduate training program emphasizing clinical correlation, molecular diagnostics, infection control, and academic leadership.
- PDCC in Infectious Diseases – Designed for post-MD candidates to gain advanced clinical expertise in the diagnosis and management of complex infectious diseases.
- PDCC in Clinical Virology – A focused program training future leaders in molecular virology, emerging viral infections, and public health virology.
These programs are supported by weekly intradepartmental academic activities including:
- Journal Clubs
- Seminars
- Clinical Case Discussions
- Monthly Integrated Laboratory Services Seminar (for faculty and residents across diagnostic departments)
State-of-the-Art Infrastructure
- 24x7 Clinical Microbiology Laboratory – Located in IPD Tower A; offers comprehensive diagnostic services and infection control surveillance.
- Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) – Equipped for outbreak investigation, molecular virology, and surveillance testing.
- Academic Block Laboratory Complex – Houses bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, anaerobic and mycobacteriology sections.
- BSL-3 Facility (Under Construction) – To enable high-risk pathogen diagnostics and research under the One Health framework.
Collaborations & Public Health Impact
